As the CEO of your business, distinguishing between tactical and operator roles is crucial.
I often hear from fellow entrepreneurs who feel like they're busy all day but not achieving the results they desire.
Sound familiar?
It might be because you're focusing on the wrong tasks.
Tactical Tasks: These are your day-to-day activities, the nuts and bolts of running your business. Think sales calls, following up with students and parents, session planning—anything that keeps the wheels turning. While these tasks are essential, they can often be delegated.
Operator Role: This is where your true impact as a CEO comes into play. Being the operator means you’re the visionary, the strategist, the one setting the direction for your business. You're not just in the trenches; you're overseeing the entire operation, ensuring everything aligns with your big-picture goals.
Transitioning to the Operator Role
So, how do you make this shift? Here’s a roadmap to get you started:
Start Small: Carve out a couple of hours each week to focus on your operator role. Maybe Monday afternoons from 1 to 3 PM become your dedicated CEO time. During this period, focus on growth strategies, team development, and visionary planning.
Create a Schedule: Clearly mark this time in your calendar. It’s sacred! Over time, you can expand this block as you become more comfortable delegating tactical tasks. I started with just an hour or two, and now I have a whole day dedicated to CEO time.
Focus on Growth: Use this time to brainstorm new ideas, plan future ventures, and develop strategies to scale your business. This is your chance to dream big and create actionable plans to turn those dreams into reality.
Consistency is key. Stick to your schedule and gradually increase your operator time. Over six months to a year, you’ll see significant changes in your business.
When I started, I was in the trenches, handling everything from marketing to lesson planning. It was exhausting, and I felt like I was going nowhere.
But once I started dedicating time to my operator role, everything changed. I focused on growth, developed my team, and set a clear vision for Gold Medal Business.
The results?
A thriving business and a more balanced life.
This transition won’t happen overnight, but it’s about taking small, consistent steps towards becoming the visionary leader your business needs.
The more time you dedicate to being an operator, the more you’ll enjoy it and see the positive impact on your business.
